When you achieve something awesome – finishing a marathon, getting a promotion, or finishing grad school, it feels great doesn’t it?
Amazing Feats
You feel like you are on top of the world. Afterward, do you look at your marathon time and compare it to the other racers? Do you wonder if you are making as much money as your peers in your new job? What about comparing your GPA and job offers with your classmates?
Don’t Compare
If you feel that others who accomplished similar feats are better, then all of a sudden you feel sad. It doesn’t matter what the others are doing. What matters is that you are enjoying yourself and happy with what you are doing.
You are unique and that makes you awesome! When you think that someone else’s uniqueness is better than your own, you aren’t doing yourself any favors. You are going down the path of beating yourself up.
Uniqueness Celebrated
When you think of your heroes do you think that they compared themselves to others? Most likely not. A long time ago, when Jimmy Page was putting together the band, Led Zeppelin, do you think he compared himself to Beethoven?
“That guy is significant and so much more popular than we’ll ever be. He doesn’t have a drummer. Let’s get rid of our drummer. And I’ll add in some oboes and replace the guitar with a few harpsichords.”
Thank goodness he didn’t say that or think that. Do you see how that thinking could have robbed us of one of the most influential bands ever? When you hear Led Zeppelin, you know who the band is. Love them or dislike them, the group left an indelible mark on the music world.
So it’s best that you don’t compare yourself to friends, family, or co-workers. Doing so will give you the freedom to think clearly and leave your own mark.
